There are always a good number of used canal boats and narrowboats for sale at any time and broadly these fall into a number of simple categories.

Private boats - usually these boats have been built especially for their owners and will have a number of bonus features that make them very suitable for extended cruising and living abourd.

Ex-Hire boats - Self-evidently these boats were built for the popular holiday market and will have been pretty well used and may also be quite basic by comparision with the private boats, however this is most likely to be reflected in their pricing and often they represent an extremly good value way to enter the market.
